About

Welcome, friends.  Let me introduce myself.  I am an independent journalist and writer of fiction.  I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and have been making my living as a professional writer for the past thirty years.

I began my career as an editor for a popular level Christian magazine, Moody Monthly, published by Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill.  I accidentally became a Hoosier in the mid-1980s (it’s a long story) and took an administrative position at the University of Notre Dame publicizing the teaching and research of faculty there in the sciences, social sciences and engineering, a position I held for fifteen years.  I have been a member of the National Association of Science Writers since 1989.

I am the single mother of four children, two now grown, and grandmother to two more.  Family frequently takes center stage in my work.  I also have two golden retrievers, one which I trained (with a little help from Midwest Assistance Dogs) to be a helper dog for my eighteen-year-old daughter Anna, who survived a stroke at birth.  I frequently joke that we live in a house with wall-to-wall golden retrievers.  (Some days that’s more true than I want to admit.)

A couple of years ago I began blogging about my garden:  Inch by Inch, Row by Row:  A novice gardener takes on soil, wind, rain and seeds with dreams of a bountiful harvest.

My editorial services company is WriteNow LLC.
